Black in the City is a podcast that focuses on the past and present experiences of people of colour in the Square Mile. The City of London’s past growth is inextricably linked to the expansion of the British Empire, the Transatlantic trafficking of enslaved people and the legacies of these past practices. This podcast pays tribute to this fact but also seeks to explore the experiences of people of colour in the past from antiquity right up to recent decades.

The project is conceived and curated by Jonathan Goddard, a London educator, musician and writer, who releases music under the name Jonny Virgo. The project is supported by a grant provided by the Barbican Community Engagement Team and seeks to include a wide range of voices, ranging from academics and financiers, to residents of the City and those embarking on careers in the Square Mile.
